A private hire driver was found guilty of causing death by careless driving but avoided prison after hitting a drunk pedestrian who stumbled into the road.

Walter Burke, a 63-year-old taxi driver from Worthington Road, Lichfield, was spared jail at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, March 12, 2026, after being found guilty of causing death by careless driving for hitting and killing 59-year-old intoxicated pedestrian Jasbir Singh on the A4540 Boulton Middleway in Birmingham at around 5:30am on October 21, 2023, receiving instead a five-year driving ban.
